Water is a source of life on Earth, but unfortunately many regions do not have access to clean water. In fact, there are around 2.5 billion people in the world who live without basic sanitation and with no access to clean water. Because of this, in the last few years, a project “Dig a Well”, was introduced and implemented in many dry regions around the world. Thanks to this project, over 1000 wells have been built. If you’re wondering what do you need to know before building a well, seek an assistance from professional well diggers. In order to build anything over 2 meters tall, you need a construction permission and to comply with certain local laws. There are many ways to build a well, but here are the three most common ones.
Digging A Well By Hand
This is the simplest way to build a well, but is also the hardest. You might need an extra pair of hands to help you out. It is simple. First pick a spot, and with the help of a shovel dig a whole about 12-15 meters deep. Once you reach a sufficient depth, install a polyvinyl chloride casing (10 cm in diameter) to protect the well from debris and prevent it from collapsing. Then place a temporary pump over the well to check the water quality. In the end, if everything went by the plan and you have found clean water, finish with installing a stainless steel positive displacement pump mounted on a concrete slab. The positive displacement pump is the most recommended pump for home use because it provides a constant flow of water.
Rent A Drilling Rig
Digging your own well would save you about 70% of the cost of a water well, but it involves huge effort. The cost-effective solution is to rent a drilling rig. Drilling rig is a small equipment that contains a drill bit which is lowered into the well hole on the end of a pipe and a motor (placed above the ground) that turns the pipe and moves the drill bit. In order to flush out the dirt and sand, the water goes through the hole of the drill bit, which brings it up to the surface for disposal. This is the perfect option for those who don’t want to spend a lot of money. However, keep in mind that you must be the owner of the land you plan to dig a well on.
Digging A Well For Professional Use
If you need to dig a well for more professional use, you will need a professional equipment as well. A professional equipment has greater air power to drive the air motor. It is quite different concept from previously mentioned methods, but it is very effective. At the beginning, a hole needs to be made by a post hole digger and a small pool of water is needed because the well needs to remain filled with water. To continue with the digging process, you will need an air-driven drill that is capable of providing at least 16 CFM of air at 90 PSI in order to dig a well deep around 30 meters. Once the digging process is completed, an in-ground pump needs to be installed because the pump which is above ground is pump up water from the well. The pump will fit inside the four inch plastic pipe, but know it runs on electrical power.
