Other types of basins that need a benchtop and can feature additional storage space underneath are drop-in and under-mount basins. However, vessel basins, also called bench-mounted basins, aren’t always placed on top of vanities or cabinets. Homeowners and designers that are going for minimalistic designs place them on top of a shelf, or some other type of surface.

As the name suggests drop-in basins are dropped into the benchtop. They feature a rim that holds the sink into place. This rim is the only par that is visual on top of the bench, which is why they are sometimes referred to as rimmed basins. Under-mount basins, on the other hand, are entirely under the sink, and their rim isn’t visible. They can look very elegant and luxurious, but their installation is more complex.
