Do you too love jewellery boxes? Who doesn’t, really. I’m sure all you gals out there have at least one where you keep the necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets; dazzling accessories that boost confidence, and precious memories. At least once in a lifetime you’ve received a handmade jewellery box as a gift, and I’m pretty sure you have bought few yourself. And still have no space to store all the accessories. I hear you my ladies.

But no matter how beautiful, jewellery boxes are not really on the cheap side. The ones that really have design and functionality in one are $40-plus. And while I’m the one with thumbs up for the idea to invest in a really unique handmade jewellery box, I’m also a huge fan of DIYs. There are so many ways you can create your own jewellery box, and even more ways for decorating it. Here’s my favourite one, and if you like it, give it a try.

Diy Jewellery Box Using Fabric And A Foam Board

For this handmade jewellery box you’ll need a large piece of foam board to cut the sides for the box and a piece of fabric to wrap the sides in. You’ll also need material for work: cutting knifes and glue.

1. Start with making the frame of the box out of the foam board. Cut a 20 by 20 cm chunk of foam board and draw a square inside of it. Draw it 4 cm from all 4 edges.

2. Cut off the corners of the foam board. The lines you drew previously will make a square shape on the foam making it easy to cut and design the walls of the box.

3. An important thing to remember when cutting is to be gentle, and don’t go all the way through the board; you want all pieces to be connected.

4. Fold all sides of the board along the lines of the shallow cuts. You should get a cube shape with an open top section. With masking tape secure the sides of the cube to hold the shape of the box.

5. Get the fabric next. Choose the colour you prefer the most and make sure it’s satin; so that it looks luxurious and shiny – perfect for a handmade jewellery box. Glue it to the foam square nicely so that no foam is visible underneath.

6. Make the bottom of the box. For this you’ll need a piece of card stock cut in 10 by 10 cm square. Once cut, use glue to adhere it to the bottom side of the box. Make it in a colour of your choice, since this is going to be the visible side of the box’s bottom.

7. Make the top of the box now. Cut a 11×11 cm square piece out of foam board and dress it in a piece of fabric that measures 15 by 15cm. Connect all triangles of the fabric and glue them to the flat bottom side of the top plate.

8. Attach the top plate to the box’s base. For this step you’ll need a small piece of fabric measuring 4 by 10 cm. Put glue on the half of the fabric and attach the material on the base. On the other half of the fabric glue the other plate and voila, you have a box!

9. Decorate the box. The last step is easy; just take anything you like from decorating elements and do your magic; whatever is the perfect jewellery box in your mind can easily be transferred on the box’s surface.
