- Attend a crane truck operator training course. To find out about programs available in your area, do an online research.
- Make sure you know how to manipulate the vehicle properly. That includes knowing how to use the foot pedals and levers to raise, lower and rotate it well.
- Learn the crane truckload capacity. Loads that exceed the vehicle capacity should not be moved. If you find that the load is over the limit, shut off the vehicle and then lighten the load.
- Before start operating a crane truck, make sure you have the adequate number or workers to help you during the lifting task. Each rig should have an operator, a signal person, and a member responsible for the crane’s parts.
- Make sure that the outrigger of the crane truck is hooked up properly to a sturdy base.
- Calculate the proper counterweight. For that, there is a formula based on the weight of the load, the operating angle and the operating radius of the boom that you can use.
