A good bottle of white wine is a must-have in any wine collection, perfectly suited to complement a wide range of meals and special moments. Its incredible versatility means there’s a flavour profile to please almost every taste. The story of this beloved drink dates back thousands of years, originating around 7,500 years ago in the Middle East before making its way to Ancient Greece. By the 1500s, it had spread across the world, with vineyards flourishing on every continent.

Today, we’re lucky to have an incredible selection of aromatic white wines to choose from. Ranging from light and crisp to rich and full-bodied, these drinks cater to diverse palates and pair beautifully with a wide array of dishes.

Sauvignon Blanc stands out with its vibrant acidity and herbaceous notes, often reminiscent of freshly cut grass or green bell pepper. Its zesty profile makes it an excellent match for seafood and salads. Riesling is a versatile grape that produces wines ranging from dry to sweet. It features notes of apple, peach, and floral elements, and it pairs well with spicy cuisines, especially Asian dishes.

If you’re curious about how to store and enjoy your favourite varieties, keep reading for some handy tips.

Best for Summer

source: bhg.com

A Chardonnay white wine brings a generous, inviting character that’s perfect for summer. Its subtle floral notes blend effortlessly with hints of smoky oak and gentle spice, creating a lively and refreshing experience that pairs wonderfully with a casual outdoor dinner or a relaxed gathering with friends. When it comes to food, Chardonnay shines alongside richer dishes like crab, white fish, or even buttery pasta, balancing flavours beautifully and enhancing the meal without overpowering it.

If you’re looking for something a little lighter, Pinot Grigio is a fantastic choice for sunny days. Its crisp, dry nature and fresh, fruity aroma make it incredibly easy to enjoy, whether you’re kicking back in your outdoor paradise alone or with friends. The clean, refreshing finish feels like a perfect complement to the warmth of the season, leaving a sense of brightness with every sip. Both Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio offer that effortless summer appeal, combining delicious taste with a refreshing quality that keeps you coming back for more.

Best for Winter

Winter doesn’t have to mean only reds by the fire. There are plenty of white wines that shine when the air turns chilly. A chilled glass of Riesling, for example, can be surprisingly comforting. Its subtle herbal notes and soft peachy undertones bring a touch of brightness to colder days.

Imagine a chilled glass in hand while you’re snuggled up on the sofa on movie night. Its aroma makes each sip feel warming and comforting, perfectly complementing that relaxed, at-home vibe. Pair it with dishes that have a bit of spice or aromatic flair, and it comes alive, cutting through the richness and enhancing every bite. Riesling’s fresh, vibrant character makes it a versatile choice for those cosy nights in, whether you’re experimenting with fusion recipes or enjoying a quiet dinner at home.

Best with Chicken

So, which white wine goes well with chicken? If you love a good chicken dinner, you know that a crisp, refreshing glass of this beverage can elevate the whole meal. A Sauvignon Blanc is a natural companion for white meats, especially when herbs are involved. Take something like a Mahi Sauvignon Blanc. It’s bright and zesty with notes of lemon and lime, perfectly balanced with subtle pepper and herbal undertones.

The plush, full-bodied texture combined with a hint of spice makes it an effortless match for roasted or grilled chicken. It’s that kind of drink that enhances the flavours on your plate without overpowering them, making every bite taste even better.

Best for a Dinner Party

source: foodandwine.com

Heading to a dinner party and want to make a good impression? A crisp, premium white wine is always a winner, and if you want to stand out, a Cloudy Bay Te Koko is a fantastic choice. This Sauvignon Blanc is a mature expression of the classic grape, offering something a little more special.

From the first sniff, you’re greeted with a fragrant bouquet of toasted nuts and nectarines, which immediately sets it apart from the usual crowd-pleasers. On the palate, it bursts with ripe tropical flavours that are vibrant yet balanced, making it a versatile companion for a range of savoury dishes.

It’s the kind of bottle that can complement everything from roasted chicken to seafood or even a rich vegetable tart. Bringing something like this shows thoughtfulness and a bit of flair, turning a simple gift into a talking point for the evening. It’s approachable enough that most people will enjoy it, yet distinctive enough to be remembered long after the last bite of dessert.

How to Store

When it comes to enjoying white wine Australia wide, serving it at the right temperature makes a big difference. Ideally, it should be chilled but not icy, around 10 degrees Celsius hits the sweet spot. If you’re planning to drink it soon, the fridge keeps it fresh and crisp. For bottles you’re not opening right away, find a cool spot out of direct sunlight to avoid any unwanted warmth or light that could affect the flavour.

While some premium bottles can develop beautifully over decades, most everyday whites are best enjoyed within three years of purchase. Storing them correctly ensures every glass tastes refreshing, bright, and full of character.

How to Choose a Riesling Wine

source: tastingtable.com

Understand Sweetness Levels

Is a Riesling wine dry or sweet? Riesling offers a wide range of sweetness levels that can satisfy the tastes even of the pickiest wine lovers. The sweetness levels range from dry to off-dry and sweet which can be moderately sweet to dessert-like sweet.

Dry Riesling

Dry riesling wines are known for their crisp, clean profile with high acidity. Dominant flavours that shine through the wine are green apples and citrus flavours, with a touch of minerality. They have a refreshing finish and are an excellent choice for those who prefer wines without sweetness. Because it feels refreshing to the palate, this resiling is often consumed in the summer.

Off-Dry Riesling

Off-dry riesling white wines are slightly sweeter than dry rieslings. They offer a balance of sweetness and acidity. Flavours often include stone fruits like peach and apricot, with a gentle honeyed note on the finish.

Sweet Riesling

Sweet riesling wines feel rich and luscious to the palate, often with pronounced sweetness balanced by good acidity. Expect to taste flavours of ripe stone fruits and honey, and sometimes floral notes. The sweetness levels in these wines range from moderately sweet to dessert-like in their intensity.

Consider the Region the Wine is Produced

Riesling is highly “terroir-expressive” which means that the profile of the wine is highly influenced by the region where is produced. Traditionally, it is grown in several regions across the globe, such as Germany, France, the USA and Australia. German rieslings stand out for their vibrant acidity, minerality and delicate fruit flavours. They typically range from dry to intensely sweet, often enhanced by notes of green apples, citrus, peach and apricot.

The German variety has great ageing potential, especially from top vineyards. French rieslings are typically dry, full-bodied and expressive with high acidity. You’ll feel notes of citrus, peach and sometimes a hint of spice or floral notes. French Rieslings are known for their longevity and ability to age gracefully. Australian wines are some of the best worldwide.

Australian rieslings, particularly those from the regions of Clare Valley and Eden Valley, are typically dry with high acidity and pronounced lime and citrus flavours. The cool climate regions contribute to the exceptional quality and ageing potential of the wines, which can develop complex toasty and honeyed notes over time. Australian rieslings are best known for their oily texture, clarity and vibrant fruitiness.

Check the Bottle Label to understand More About the Wine

The bottle label always has a wealth of information which can give you an insight into the sweetness level, alcohol content, ageing potential and tasting notes. On the bottle label, you can notice some of the label terms such as Trocken (dry), Halbtrocken (off-dry), Kabinett (typically off-dry and light), Spätlese (late harvest, often sweeter) and Auslese which is typically sweet. All of these terms are specific to the type of the wine and their sweetness level.

When it comes to the alcohol content, generally a lower alcohol content of 7-9% suggests a sweeter wine, while anything above that usually suggests a drier style. Some labels also provide information about the tasting notes that describe the wine’s flavour profile. This info can be especially helpful in choosing a wine that will best satisfy your tasting preferences.

Ways to Enjoy Riesling Wines

source: veronikasadventure.com

Serve it at the Right Temperature

The temperature at which the wine is served can significantly affect the taste. Dry rieslings are best served at temperatures between 7-10°C. This temperature helps the wine maintain its crispiness and highlights its acidity and mineral notes. Off-dry wines are served at slightly cooler temperatures of 6-8°C. The lower temperatures enhance the wine’s refreshing qualities and balance its sweetness with acidity.

Use the Proper Glassware

Riesling wines should be served in specific glasses to help concentrate their delicate aromas. Choose a glass with a slightly taller and narrower bowl to help direct those aromas towards your nose while sipping for full enjoyment. On the other hand, a smaller bowl helps preserve the wine’s temperature and enhances its freshness and crisp qualities.

Foods to Pair With

Dry rieslings go best with seafood and poultry like light chicken and turkey dishes, especially when they are prepared with lemon or herbal sauces. They’re ideal with salads, light vegetable dishes and fresh herbs. Off-dry riesling pairs excellent with spicy Asian dishes like Thai curry and Indian cuisine.

It matches well with richer fish like salmon and it’s typically served along with dishes like pork chops, glazed ham or sausages. Sweet rieslings work perfect with fruit-based deserts, blue cheese and foie gras. As you can see, riesling’s versatility caters to various tastes and it’s an ideal companion to various dishes, both vegetarian and meat-based meals. Pour yourself a glass of this aromatic sensation and cheers to new beginnings.

If you have my passion and thirst for wine, you know what I mean when I say that a meal without wine is called breakfast! Finding good wine, texture, flavour and aroma-wise, does not have to be expensive. The notion, “the higher the price, the better the wine”, does not apply here. For example, lesser-known varieties are generally cheaper. Not because they do not offer quality wines, but because they lack the spotlight phenomenon. You can easily find such discount wine online and maybe take advantage of the buy by the case offers. Such online deals can save you up to 15% and more.

When I shop for this grape juice divine, I sometimes forget how wine-schooled am I ( I have tasted over 150 Australia-made and international brands). In fact, my eyes are well-trained and I can easily detect a good wine at the right price. Every time I leave a wine store, my hands are full of the best wines that come with a great price. For that reason, I hand over to you pieces of experience n the form of advice on how to find good wine and save money at the same time:

Buy Second Labels

All the best quality wines that come from good wine makers are around $20-$30 more expensive than their second label. Second label wineries give lower the price because they do not use same fruits as the original ones. However, bare in mind that a good winemaker will make good wine whatever the fruits!

Try Cheap Brands

People are usually afraid of trying cheaper wines. Recent studies have shown that from 600 participants, nearly half will choose the cheap wine as the more tasty one. Winemakers use the same fruits to make the cheaper wines. Go out there and fall in love with a cheaper wine today!

Take Notes

If you find a wine you hate, take a note in your notebook. Did you find the best wine in your life? Then write it down. I know there are dozens of brands and variations of brands out there, so with these notes, you will be sure not to waste your money on a wine you do not like. Again!

Know the Countries

France and Italy are the biggest wine producers worldwide, but remember that Australia, Spain, Chile and Argentina also make good wine for a fraction of the cost of world famous expensive wines. For instance, Tempranillo is a very tasty wine and you can find it for just $6-$7 per bottle.

Conclusion

In order to find good wine, you no longer need to look at the price. There are so many brands out there and healthy competition has led to various choices of discount wine online for you dinner table. Now you are just a click or a block away from wines with which you’ll wish to start and end your day!

2. Make Consumer Reports Your Guide

For those of you that did not know, Consumer Reports has a wine buying guide that is very simple, detailed and offers amazing guidelines for buying wine. If you are new in the wine buying spree and do not want to end up with a bunch of fancy bottles and trashy wine, read it. After all, you do want to like what you are drinking, right? Another thing we all need to thank Consumer Reports for, is their listing of holiday wine bargains: buying cheap wine online has never been more convenient!

3. Do Your Homework

Impulsive buying is not the ideal way to choose wine. Unless you know the wine world so good it is impossible for you to make a mistake. If the other way around, you will end up buying something you do not even like but you got it just because it was so cheap! Do not make this stupid mistake and do your homework: go to a wine tasting event, or taste a few varieties at home with a few friends; write down what you like and then go wine shopping. You’ll be done in no time.

4. Online Bargains

There’s no better way of saving money than looking for bargains online. When bargain season hits, the best way to stock your cellar with wine bottles is to do the following:

Buy in bulk – you can get a discount up to 25% if you buy a box of about 6 bottles of wine. How great is that?

Order by case – when you order a case of wine, you automatically pay less. It is a sales policy, nothing to bang your head about. Order cases every time you can. If discount is not specified, ask if there is any.

Warehouse clubs are a goldmine – shop at warehouse clubs every time you have the chance. They offer everything at lower prices from those in stores.

Rose is the perfect summer wine. It is light and refreshing; meant to be enjoyed chilled; and makes the perfect combination with summer foods such as fresh salads and grilled dishes.

Rose wines feature a pink colour that can vary from light orange to intense purple. That is because at the beginning of the wine-making process, red-skinned grapes are crushed, left in contact with the wine for about two or three days and then discarded. Red-skinned grapes were in the mixture long enough to influence the colour of the wine as well as the flavour and finish. The skins give the Rose wine its tempting tart and quality flavour, which is actually what makes it different from lighter white wines.

In the past, great Rose wine was classified as a medium-sweet wine style. But that has led to a negative public perception of the wine. Connoisseurs did not take this wine serious due to its pink colour and sweet taste. But what is good in the wine world, is that it is constantly changing. And today there are also drier, bolder great Rose wines available on the market, and they are very popular among wine connoisseurs. And all thanks to the new and different ways Rose wines are produced today. This has also contributed to the unique and complex characteristics of the wine.

So How Do You Pick a Great Rose wine? Here Are Few Ways

The main characteristic of a great Rose wine is crispness. In wine terms ‘crisp’ means that the wine features a tart, acidic quality which is very pleasing and refreshing. Once you get to taste a couple of Roses, you may find yourself enjoying the ones that are very crisp.

The best way to choose a great Rose wine is by the wine region. Rose is a vine varietal that is very popular in France, hence, France produces the highest-quality Rose wines. The name of the region printed on the label of the bottle will give you a clue of what’s inside.

Rose wines produced in Bandol and Cassis are classified as very high quality. They are often dry and well-balanced, and because they are rated as the best ones, they are also the most expensive. For something a little more budget-friendly, look for Roses produced in the Tavel and Lirac French regions (which will be more dark, rich Roses) and Coteaux du Languedoc, which produces inexpensive yet great Rose wines.

To give this summer a warm welcome, before you start grilling and eat outside, first choose a delicious, refreshing Rose wine to enhance your summer mood.

Can you tell what was the defining thing that made you fall in love with wine for the first time? Sure you can. We all have a personal wine story; the beginning of our endless love for wine, the elixir of life and passion.

The truth is, wine emulates aromas and flavours that exist outside the humble grape. You probably heard people say that a red wine has dark chocolate hint or blackcurant/cherry undertones. They are right because dark chocolate has specific chemical compounds that make it smell and taste the way it does. Well, the same chemical compounds are present in many wines and that is why we can smell and taste them.

If you still haven’t had this extraordinary feeling about wines and are wondering what all the fuss is about, read on to learn how to taste white wine to instantly fall in love with it and discover its charm.

Try Three Wines

The first step is to try 3 completely different types of white wines. For example, try Sauvignon Blanc wine, Chardonnay and Viognier. Each is different, but you are not obliged to pick out wines that come from different varieties only. Instead, yоu can go for three different wine brands that come from the same grape-family. For example Sauvignon Blanc wine, is a non-sweet dry white wine. On the nose you can sense fresh cut grass, passion fruit, tomato leaves, green pea, melon and asparagus. You can easily recognize these aromas as we have all have had some exposure to these flavours at some point in our lives.

Set The Mood

This doesn’t mean that you need to be in a special mood for wine testing. This means that you need to keep the wines at the same place in order to have the same temperature. It is recommended to refrigerate white wines to about 10-12 °C. Keep in mind that white wines shouldn’t be over 20 °C.

The next step is to serve all 3 white wines at the same time into white wine glasses. Have a glass of water next to you to rinse between each tasting.

Have A Sniff

Twirl the wine in the glass, put your nose on the top of the glass and take a short sniff, exhale and sniff again slowly. As a beginner you will smell the alcohol first, but after some time you will get used to it. After few seconds twirl again and have another longer sniff. This time you will sniff aromas. Repeat the same thing with the next two wines – no tasting, just sniffing. After you have sampled the aromas of each wine, you’ll be able to make the difference.

Tasting

After the twirling and sniffing, now it is time to taste each wine. Swirl the glass, take a sip, swish it back and forward and swallow or spit the wine. The most important factor about wine is not its price or region; it is whether you enjoy it or not. So if buttery Chardonnay is too heavy for you, go for a crisp Sauvignon Blanc wine. Try to decide on your favourite, and write down why it is better than the others. You don’t need to write complicated and long descriptions. Keep it simple.

Did You Fall In Love?

Getting to know the tasty reds and whites like Pinot Noir or Sauvignon Blanc wine can be a bit confusing. But by starting from the beginning and slowly developing a personal relationship with wine is the perfect way to delve into the world of this devine drink.

When Silesian Lutherans first settled here back in the middle of the 19th century, they gave the valley a subtle European look and charm, which reflected in the wine making process. This made the Barossa wine region home to some of the very popular wines that quickly became Australia’s ambassadors around the world. Australia’s tourism policy puts a great accent on the country’s food and wine culture, which results in a large number of tourists visiting the Barossa wine region, where more than 150 vineyards and 70 cellar doors are open during all seasons.

Barossa wine region is mostly famous for the production of some terrific Shiraz red wines. Although it was long believed that Australian wine makers aimed towards some massive, jammy wines, nowadays they’re actually aiming for elegance and finesse. Cabernet Sauvignon is also present in Barossa, but due to heat, it can be tricky. You can find it in some sub regions of the valley. Another trademark of the Barossa wine region is the Eden Valley’s Riesling, one of the best in Australia. As you can see, the huge diversity in growing conditions makes the Barossa wine region home to many different wines.

Once in Barossa, the “must do” activity is to wine and dine. The region offers some unique and very unconventional restaurants, with local ingredients on the menu. Pretty much all the restaurants support local wineries, so you’ll experience the Barossa to the fullest anywhere you choose to dine. A good place to start with is Appellation, where you can try professionally prepared meals with local ingredients like sausages and bacon, and taste some amazing wines. Here are a few suggestions:

Barossa Valley Estate Shiraz 2012 – with flavours of red plum and fresh blackberry;

Domain Barossa Black Tongue Shiraz 2011 – fruit flavours reminiscent of dark chocolate, pepper and black currant;

Fernando Special Release Shiraz 2012 – a complex and elegant wine with very rich taste;

Grant Burge Benchmark Chardonnay 2013 – plush, rich and peachy Chardonnay;

Grant Burge Shadrach Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 – with flavours of blackberry, ripe plums and layers of chocolate, coffee and a little spice, this wine is elegant, strong and expensive.

Complete your wine tasting experience with a visit to some of the famous wineries; almost all of them have some cellar-door operation, from wine tasting bars to tours and cafes. You can start with Rockford, where you can see the open-top slate fermenters and oak casks. Moreover, you can purchase as much as you want of the Basket Press Shiraz. Other wineries worth visiting are Seppeltsfield, where you can try some great fortifieds; Henschke, Yalumba and the newest ones, Two Hands and Torbreck. And to finish your wine tasting tour, visit Jacob’s Creek, the first and the oldest commercial vineyard in Barossa wine region.

For accommodation in Barossa, you can choose from various hotels. If you enjoy and can afford luxury, Louise is the place to go to. Every apartment has an outdoor shower and a whirlpool tub, and the bathrooms are very large and comfortable.

There are a lot more things to see and experience in Barossa. Rent a car or a bike, and go on a trip. A local’s advice is to spend an afternoon in the lovely Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park and enjoy the native flowers and kangaroos. Visit heritage towns and learn more about the history of this region. Discover the work of artists in art shops, galleries and craft shops. Or, go on a guided tour and get a rare insight of this amazing part of Barrossa.

Yarra Valley is one of the best regions in Australia where you can spend a weekend of your dreams with your partner or family. With a plenty of parks, shopping centers, outdoor adventure trips and food, Yarra Valley offers a variety of experiences that you can add on your to-do list.

The region has built its reputation as one of the world’s top food and wine regions. At the heart of this region there are many wineries, as well as a lot of cafes, restaurants, art galleries, markets, areas for nature walks, mountain views and more. If you are ready to spend this upcoming weekend in Yarra Valley, read on to find out the must-visit places of the region.

Hargreaves Hill Brewery

Hargreaves Hill is one of the leading microbreweries in Australia and is located in the Yarra Valley. With a wide selection of quality beers, this brewery is definitely worth your visit if you love drinking beer. The secret of the Hargreaves Hill beer is in the ingredients: Yarra Valley water, yeast, malted barley and hops. With a great balance and flavours, the Hargreaves Hill brewery awaits you.

Yarra Yering

The Yarra Valley is historically known as a wine producing region. Hand picked and hand harvested, the grapes at Yarra Valley are of exceptional quality, as well as the wines. Make sure you visit the Yarra Yering. The wines are well drained, exposed to warm sun and elevated so that they avoid the spring frosts. There you may drink Yarra Valley wine, unbottled and fresh, just like Australians used to do in the past. If you are lucky to get into the winery for a peek, you will see how a fine wine is made.

Rae’s Restaurant

When the time for a nice dinner comes, look no further than the popular Rae’s Restaurant. There you will find a rich menu with very attractive dishes, but be prepared to pay a bit more. Our recommendation is the wine smoked beef fillet, just make sure to drink Yarra Valley wine with it to have a sneak preview of the heaven. The steak is cooked just as ordered and it comes with a fondant potato, Dutch carrots, onions and is flavoured with a red wine, usually Shiraz.

Balgownie Estate

The perfect place to stay during your time in the Yarra Valley is the Balgownie Estate. This suite property has an incredible view over a wineyard, where you can drink Yarra Valley wine from the balcony and plan the places to visit the following day. The bedroom is large enough and the kitchen is equipped with everything that you may need for a weekend. The bathroom features a round spa bath with a clear glass section through which you can look out onto the wineyard.

‘Drinking alcohol promotes weight gain’. A myth or a true fact? For party lovers, a myth. For fitness experts and nutritionists, a fact. Alcohol is the beverage we barely consider as a caloric drink. But the truth is that alcohol is high in calories, which we consume without being aware. This can surely ruin the healthy eating plan and diet. In other words, if on a diet to lose extra weight, know that alcohol is undeniably, one of the biggest enemies of the fit and slim body line.

Expert nutritionists claim that the elimination of alcoholic beverages is one of the few weight-loss strategies that really work. But this does not mean you are FORBIDDEN to consume any alcohol. Of course, not. You just need to do it in moderation. With so much to celebrate in life, from anniversaries and birthdays to professional and personal achievements, it is really hard to say no to alcohol drinks. Let’s admit it, alcohol is after all, the most effective positive mood boosters.

The good news is, you can still drink alcohol and stay slim. With moderation and right-drink selection, of course. What you need to do is learn more about the alcohol you consume and how much of it will not sabotage your ‘getting slim’ goal. To help you get and stay on the right track, here are few ways you can drink alcohol without adding extra weight.

Switch to white wine. It is widely known that any type of white wine is good for both physical and mental health and for maintaining the body in a good shape. For example, a quality, easy-drinking Chardonnay is a diet-friendly type of white wine. It is low in congeners, which supports body’s metabolic rate, meaning you can drink white wine without feeling guilty about it.

Go for a white wine spritzer. Let’s say you are invited to a wedding but are on a strict diet and alcohol is forbidden. Toasting with a glass of water is not a way to go. Hook up with any type of white wine spritzer. Aside from being refreshing and delicious, the blend of white wine and club soda cuts calories in half.

In order to prevent the negative alcohol effect on your health and figure, drink no more than two light cocktails at night, no more than three nights a week. Even better, ditch the Cosmopolitan, Margarita, Mojito and Pina Colada and enjoy the health benefits of white or red wine.
