The term comes from the Italian word “baked earth”, and glazed terracotta ware is often known as “red earthenware”. 

While terracotta clay fires red, in its raw form it can be anything from brown and green to maroon and red. You can find red-burning low-fire clays practically anywhere – they’re nearly always extremely impure, contaminated by iron oxide (which gives them the red-burned colour) and various minerals that include fluxing. Because the impurities function as fluxes, the material fires considerably more fiercely than a mixture of white-burning clays at the same temperature. However, terra cotta clays don’t attain fired maturity in their typical cone firing range 06-04.

Not surprisingly, because they’re fired at considerably lower temperatures, terracotta clays aren’t as nearly as strong and long-lasting as stoneware. On the other hand, fired terracotta pottery frequently resists breaking when exposed to abrupt temperature changes. Brighter colours, significantly reduced energy costs, less kiln wear and tear, and the option to fire ware on stilts (for glazed bottoms) are other benefits Terra cotta can make great functional pottery ware when covered with a glaze that is well-melted, attached, and fitting.

Stoneware Clay

They’re referred to as stoneware because of the stone-like properties they display when heated. Stoneware clays have various colours and are hard, thick surfaces. They’re typically burned to maturity at temperatures between 1.176 and 1.237 degrees Celsius for mid-fire stoneware clay bodies and between 1.204 and 1.224 degrees Celsius for high-fire stoneware clays.

When heated, this clay type develops a variety of hues, from light grey or tan to dark grey or chocolate brown. The temperature of the firing utilised has the biggest impact on these colours. Its hardness and durability make it a great choice for functional items like dinnerware, making it the preferred clay for production potters. Stoneware often doesn’t leak and binds well with its glazes when burned to maturity.

It should be mentioned that the minerals that makeup stoneware clays, such as feldspar, quartz, mica, kaolinite, and fire clay, can vary greatly. There will be very small particles of mica and quartz in the potentially existent kaolinite, which will be exceedingly disordered. Flint might or might not be there.

Porcelain Clay

Point

Snap

The amount of snap in a brush is determined by how quickly or not the bristles snap back into parallel with the handle after being bent at an angle. Some brush fibres, such as squirrel or goat, will snap very little. Some fibres, such as hog hair or Taklon, have a high content. Whether you prefer a snappy brush for watercolour depends on your painting style and preferred techniques.

Spring

The term “spring” refers to how well the brush’s belly controls itself on the page. Spring is distinct from snap-in in that a brush can have very little snap, whereas a quality brush should always have spring. Mop brushes, for example, are designed to be pulled around the page and have little snap, but they do have spring—at least the good ones do.

A lack of spring can cause a brush to splay instead of maintaining its shape or edge when it hits the surface, while too much spring can cause a brush to dump its pigment or water load constantly.

Flow

This is the rate at which the colour flows from the tip of the brush to the page. A good brush will have an even, consistent flow rate, resulting in a consistent release onto the paper. Natural hair bristles are known to be masters at this due to the cellular structure of the hair’s surface, which aids in this attribute.

Dump

The dump happens when a brush releases its entire pigment load at once. Typically, this is not a pleasant experience, resulting in blotchy paintings and extremely frustrated artists.

Kisses from Katie follows the life of an eighteen-year-old senior girl from Nashville, raised in a middle-class family and is also popular in her school, president of her class, and homecoming queen. She breaks up with her boyfriend, disobeys her parents, and loses almost all of her friends, so she could move to Uganda where she doesn’t speak the language and only knows one person.

So what drove this young girl do something like that? Well, she definitely didn’t go to Uganda to party, considering that this is what’s on most eighteen-year-old’s minds. For the believers, the answer is actually quite simple: a passion to follow Jesus.

It all started in 2006 when Katie visited Uganda for three weeks and she found herself moved by the people there, so much that she had to go back and care for them. And that’s what she did. In 2007 after she graduated, she returned to Uganda so she can teach kids at an orphanage. Immediately she faced all kinds of challenges, personal struggle, and a spiritual awakening. But her love for the people of Uganda just kept growing and the next year she started a non-profit organization which supported more than a hundred students and she also adopted eight girls. Today her organization Amazima supports well over 400 students and she now has 13 daughters.

Though many would consider what Katie did a bit radical, in her mind she truly believes that her journey is simply following God and doing her best to trust Him and whatever He presents before her.

Thanks to that her time in Uganda have been accompanied with different kinds of miraculous intervention, but that doesn’t mean that it was without any difficulties. It is painful, it is repetitive, but she continues to walk the path laid before her because she learns to see Jesus in all the people around her.

Katie’s story is full with all kinds of life’s difficulties, however it is in the hardest places, where we can do nothing but rely on God’s will, we feel closest to him.
