In 2003 Toyota became Australia’s best-selling car brand, selling 186 thousand vehicles and held that title for almost a decade. That same year, it strengthened its offerings with the Toyota Kluger, a mid-sized SUV. With the 4WD and utility sector covered, the company needed something to slot between the smaller Rav4 and larger Prado when it came to cars that were capable on the tarmac and also could handle a little off-roading.
Based on the underpinnings of its richer cousin, the Lexus RX, the Kluger came in 5 and 7 seat configurations, and carried the same engine and drivetrain. Initially, the larger 3.3-litre V6 in an all-wheel-drive was the only available option for Australian buyers. Later generations moved to a larger petrol engine with the choice of either front or all-wheel drive. With the new model released in July, there are plenty of cars on Aussie streets if you’re considering a large, reliable and comfortable family car.
Even on its first try, Toyota produced a decent car. Admittedly, this was a little late as the Kluger was on offer a couple of years earlier in Japan and North America. But luckily for us, the cars came with features missing in those markets, like the bigger petrol engine, all-wheel drive, an integrated centre console in the interior and alloy instead of steel wheels. Further generations down the years saw mostly improvements in interior refinement and safety features, such as USB charging ports, parking sensors, various driver aids, and standard navigation. Particularly good for owners was that a large range of aftermarket products was becoming readily available, both for new and older Klugers. Some features that didn’t even feature as options on older cars are now accessible.
Accessories for the Toyota Kluger
All Toyota Klugers can be optioned and accessorised with a range of features and equipment, either for the exterior, which will bring appearance more up-to-date with current models, and with interior accessories that improve on outdated tech and keep the car clean and organised. You can also buy a host of Toyota Kluger aftermarket accessories that cater to things like your camping or towing needs.
Exterior Accessories
A wide variety of add-ons will improve how your car looks, while also protecting the paintwork. For front protection, go for a coated nudge bar. The black colour will accentuate the Kluger’s rugged lines, but also give it some style. Combine this with similarly coated bonnet protector linings that will cover up any scratches or damage to the bonnet, while protecting the windscreen from things like debris, rocks and insects. Side protection comes in the form of window shields, and protects the cabin as well. You can also look for headlight covers if you’re often venturing out in the bush. For some comfort when getting in or out, and for added underbody protection, a set of aluminium or steel side steps will do the job nicely. All items can be found cheaply aftermarket, and more than make up for their asking price.
Klugers can also be adorned with different types of roof racks. Bikes racks will carry one or more bikes, ski racks will tend to winter sports equipment. Universal racks and cases are good for any extra luggage. For towing caravans or trailers, get a rated tow bar kit. Other items include different kinds of lights, like fog, tail and work lights.
Interior Accessories
To better organise your stuff in the boot and cabin, look for things like boot liners, boot organisers, and cargo accessories. Boot liners will keep things clean from spills, pets and any other luggage, while organisers and drawers will sort things in easily accessible compartments. Cargo nets will keep groceries in place, and cargo barriers will shield passengers from large objects. The boot is the right place to keep a First Aid Kit if you already don’t have one.
Older models can benefit from cheap aftermarket tech, like parking sensors and cameras, device chargers and navigation systems. New, integrated units will pair with your phone.
Other items to consider on the inside include floor mats, seat covers, dash covers and leather shift knobs. All can be purchased cheaply.
General Accessories
Most Klugers have 12V sockets that can power portable batteries and stuff like fridges and electric stoves if you want to do some camping. These items are sold in camping stores, along with the usual camping gear like tents, sleeping bags, awnings and camping furniture.
Aftermarket vs OEM Products
Toyota dealerships offer a range of genuine OEM products, like the ones mentioned above. Generally, if you’re buying your Kluger new, you can go for any factory-fitted accessories if you get a decent discount. Otherwise, a better option would be to shop for aftermarket accessories. These are all good quality, are much easier on the wallet and have no compatibility issues regarding fit. For larger items, like roof racks, there may be some work you need to do yourself. Some items are even locally produced, so you’ll be getting a good product, and helping the community.
Look for Toyota Kluger aftermarket accessories in all good automotive stores. 4WD stores stock a wide range of products, and might even sell camping gear. If you don’t find your particular kind of tent or trailer, look to camping and trailer retailers.
