No matter how skilled you are in roller skating, you should always wear protective gear. Accidents happen even to professional roller skaters and the consequences sometimes are very serious. So, to avoid pain and injuries, before embarking on the exciting journey that skating is, get yourself some quality skating protective gear and start using it on the regular.

Roller Skating Protective Helmet

The first thing you need to protect while roller skating is your head. The number of injuries that involve the head when it comes to roller skating is enormous and you don’t want to experience those consequences. The best way to protect your head is by wearing roller skating protective gear ergo, a helmet. Roller skating helmets are made from multiple layers, offer great protection and are strong enough to withstand heavy impacts and absorb the pressure that otherwise can seriously damage your head, cause concussions, fractures, etc.

The outer layer of the roller skating helmet is the strongest one that prevents anything from penetrating further. The second is the thick foam layer that does a great job of absorbing impact and keeping your head comfortable and protected, while the last one is the layer that’s directly in contact with your head. It has moisture-wicking properties and it’s really soft to touch which is important because you don’t want a helmet that’s unpleasant to wear and causes irritation or one that acts as a distraction.

Roller skating protective gear is recommended both for the ones that ride roller skates recreationally and for those that compete in roller skating and similar disciplines. As I mentioned before, mistakes and accidents happen even to those that are incredibly skilled, so you shouldn’t take your chances. There are a ton of brands that sell helmets that have been tested and are certified to protect from impact. With a helmet like that, you’ll be safe no matter how passionately you roller skate. But, one more thing you need to pay attention to is the size. Only a helmet that fits you perfectly can protect you 100%. A loose helmet is not that effective. They range from size XS to 2XL.

Protective Knee Pads for Roller Skating

Moving on, you’re going to need a pair of knee pads. Knee pads are made from durable fabrics, EVA foam and an interior made of lycra. Quality knee pads are stretchy and comfortable to wear. They allow the skater full freedom of movement and at the same time offer protection from impact and injuries. Skate protective gear doesn’t prevent you from performing well, quite the contrary, it helps you perform even better knowing you’re fully protected.

Knee pads have an anatomical design and come with straps that allow you to adjust and attach them perfectly onto your knees. At the same time, the straps secure the knee pad in place, preventing malfunction during the ride. Same as the helmets, knee pads come in sizes. They range from sizes S to XL. The best way to get your size right is to try on the knee pads and see what works for you and what doesn’t.

Roller Skating Wrist Savers

The wrist savers offer support to your wrists and protect them from impact thanks to the innovative design and the impact-resistant splints implemented both at the front and at the back. The wrist savers also have EVA foam incorporated since it is considered to be the best one in providing protection and absorbing impact.

Usually, wrist savers are made from stretchy materials and nylon mesh so that they fit nicely but still allow the wrist to move. The wrist savers are meant for roller skaters, the ones engaged in roller derby as well as all the other roller sports. For a perfect fit, you need to match the measurements of your hands with those of the wrist guards although, you can always try them on and see which size is the best for you.

Protective Shatterproof Glasses

Your eyes should be protected the same way other parts of your body are. The wind and particles in the air can cause irritations and prevent you from skating the way you’re supposed to. As the name suggests, shatterproof glasses are resistant to impact, they don’t get damaged easily but protect your eyes from the wind, particles and the strong sun rays. Since you’re getting roller skating protective gear you should get the full equipment. Protective gear skate isn’t whole without the shatterproof glasses. Shatterproof glasses have a compact design, fit nicely and help the one that skates have better depth perception, observe the terrain more easily and avoid the pavement glare off.

The Right Roller Skates

Above everything else, it’s really important to choose the right pair of roller skates. There are many different types of roller skates available and you should choose the pair that feels the most comfortable. You have quad roller skates as well as inline roller skates. Many debate that inline roller skates are better and offer flexibility which is very important in roller skating.

The right pair of skates should provide your feet with comfort and support. You can only perform as good as you feel while wearing your roller skates. That’s why you need to make a good choice before the purchase. The roller skates you end up choosing should have a soft sole, a design that offers good ankle support, an outer shell that’s impact-resistant and proper ventilation. Picking the right pair of roller skates is one of the best ways to get ahead in the roller skating game.

The risk of an injury is much bigger when you don’t feel comfortable with the skates you’re wearing when your movements are restricted and when the skates don’t offer the stability they’re supposed to. It may seem like a small detail but choosing the right pair of roller skates is actually the most important thing. Keep in mind that you’ll be spending quite a big amount of time wearing the roller skates so it might as well be a pleasant and safe experience for you.
