The Japanese king of reliability and affordability, Toyota, has stayed true to its goal since its most popular model, the Corolla, was first introduced. This mid-sized sedan embodies the brand’s yearning for continuous improvement and consistency in quality, no matter how boring the design of the car may seem to some people.

A Corolla is synonymous with tried-and-true everyday motoring without being extravagant or too needy. Toyota’s best-selling car ever is modest and long-lasting while being safe and comfortable at the same time. When it comes to safety, timely maintenance of brake pads (as important and as taken for granted as wing mirrors), is a crucial part of a Corolla’s safety.

Types of Brake Pads

source: autonationmobileservice.com

Ceramic

Talking about spending a fortune on brake pads, if that’s what you want to do, then consider getting ceramic pads for your Corolla. While they are not the quickest to warm up, once up to temperature, ceramic Toyota Corolla brake pads are the best performing, quietest and cleanest of them all.

They last much longer and can make a big difference when it comes to hard braking, especially on a track. Just know that fitting a ceramic Corolla brake pad set would be overkill when it comes to regular commuting.

NAO

One of the most commonly used brake pads on commuter vehicles nowadays are NAO or non-asbestos organic pads. They are made of organic fibres and resins such as fibreglass, rubber, cellulose and kevlar. This makes NAO brakes for a Toyota Corolla the most affordable and fitting for everyday driving. However, this blend of materials makes organic pads easy to heat up and wear down much quickly. This generates more brake dust, but it makes them quite even when not warmed up.

Low-Metallic

With low-metallic pads, you are still getting NAO contents as the base of the friction material, they’re just paired with steel or copper around 10% and 30%. This mix of materials makes for pads that are more resistant to wear than regular NAO pads and ones that provide more stopping power. The downsides of low-metallic brake pads are that they are noisier and more expensive than NAO pads.

Semi-Metallic

With semi-metallic Corolla brake pads, you can expect a longer lifespan and even greater stopping power than the above-mentioned pads. That’s because they are made of metal, between 30% and 65%, such as copper wires and steel wool. This makes them louder and longer to warm up, but it also helps improve heat dissipation and management without costing a fortune.

Brake Pad Maintenance

source: xlmechanicalservice.ca

Driving

To keep your pads for as long as possible, it’s important to use them accordingly and keep them in good shape, which starts with how you drive. If you want to avoid replacing pads more frequently, then avoid harsh acceleration and using the brakes when going into a turn. Instead, rely on engine braking as this way you not only save your Toyota Corolla brake pads but also the fuel while being equally safe. Just adjust your speed next time you’re making a turn, especially on a sharp corner.

Braking

Using the brake pedal shouldn’t be an on/off switch, you should modulate the braking power available under your foot. This way, when braking, you break smoothly and safely, which, when combined with engine braking (when coming to a complete stop) it wears down the brakes much less and thus leaves more friction material, making them last longer.

Fluid

Brake fluid, like any other fluid in your vehicle, needs to be replaced at a regular interval. For a Corolla, this is anywhere between 2 to 3 years or from 30,000 to 50,000 km. Fresh fluid makes for a much better pedal feel and improves stopping power, especially if there have been air bubbles in the braking system.

Overloading

When loading your vehicle, it is important not to exceed the capacity the manufacturer has stated as its limit. For the Corolla, this shouldn’t go past 450 and 500 kg, depending on the year and body style. The exact number can be found on the door jamb sticker or owner’s manual and it shouldn’t be matched or let alone crossed over, as it can stress the brakes, especially the pads since you need to apply more force to the pedal.

There’s also more pressure on the suspension and chassis to the point where it can cause serious damage. Remove any items in the boot or back seats that add even a little bit of weight, as all together they do make for a substantial difference. Of course, this doesn’t include stuff like the spare wheel or spare parts like bulbs or a first aid kit, as they are essential items.

Check

The simplest preventative maintenance you can do on your Corolla brakes pads is to take a look at them from time to time. This doesn’t require you to take the wheel, as you only need a torch and 5 minutes of your time to check the thickness of the pads on all four corners.

Braking Basics

source: facebook.com/VMAXBrakes/

Bringing your Yaris, Supra or Hilux to a safe stop revolves (literally) around resilient and responsive Toyota brake rotors. These metal discs work together with brake pads to create the required friction and braking force when pressing the brake pedal. The parts line all four wheels in recent Toyota models, with superior stopping power, shorter (and safer) braking distances, better heat dissipation (for longer lifespans) and improved all-weather performance than comparable and older drum brakes.

With that said, braking involves several parts besides the rotors. Pressing the brake pedal activates hydraulic fluid in the master cylinder. This is pushed through the brake lines to actuate one or more pistons within the callipers lining each rotor. Pistons press the pads against the rotor, creating friction that slows down the wheels.

This is then turned into heat and quickly dissipates. Stepping off the pedal disengages the brake pads and callipers, ensuring the brakes are ready for the next application. Ensuring that pads, rotors and other parts are functional and have no or minimal wear through regular inspections contributes to a safe journey.

Signs of Worn Brake Rotors

Brake discs last anywhere between 50 and 100 thousand kilometres and depend and what, how and where you drive. Build quality and materials also play a part. The parts endure normal wear and tear with regular use, with the metal in the rotors thinning out over time and impacting overall safety with reduced braking performance.

Common signs that the discs in your Toyota are worn include:

Physical and visual wear: check for grooves, cracks or scratches on the rotor surface before driving. These indicate advanced wear, embedded debris in the pads, and increased contact with brake pads that have worn out to the metal backing. Discolouration points to overheating (often from hard braking) and corrosion from driving in wet or humid conditions. Deformed or warped brake discs often result from uneven wear, issues with the pads, or sticking callipers.

Noises: grinding and screeching noises result from uneven contact with the brake pads or increased rubbing against the callipers.

Vibrations and pulsating: pulsating pedals, vibrations through the steering wheel, and uneven contact with the pads compromise safety and handling. Check for wear in both the pads and rotors.

Increased stopping distances: worn or warped discs reduce the contact area with the brake pads, leading to longer stopping distances.

Other factors are manufacturing defects, misaligned discs, improper installation, damage sustained from potholes, or road debris and frequent driving in inclement weather. Regular brake system inspections that determine minimal safe thickness should rule out most issues. Otherwise, expect reduced braking efficiency, increased wear in other parts (especially the callipers, wheel bearings and suspension), and of course, reduced safety.

Key Buying Considerations

source: facebook.com/VMAXBrakes/

Toyota owners can choose genuine Toyota brake rotors sourced directly from the dealership or aftermarket variants from established third-party brands. Original equipment rotors ensure compatibility with your vehicle, consistent braking performance, and expected longevity. These do, however, come at a price. For performance vehicles and those with expired warranties, aftermarket options offer lower prices, often superior build and materials, and most importantly, improved stopping power with better heat dissipation.

When buying, consider the type of rotor compatible with your Toyota:

Solid discs – also called blank or smooth discs, these are seen in lower trim Corollas, early Yaris/Echo models and on the rear axle in some Prados and early Hilux models. The solid piece of metal offers good braking power due to the larger surface, but can suffer from overheating and warping in hard braking.

Vented – these resemble two sandwiched discs with vents between the front and rear surfaces. They provide better heat dissipation and prevent brake fade. Common applications are in current Corollas, Camrys, older Avalons, the Hilux and Kluger.

Drilled – usually an aftermarket-only option, drilled discs have holes drilled through the surface to ensure improved heat loss in harder braking. They also reduce weight. Ideal upgrades for Toyota’s GR performance vehicles and off-roaders like the Land Cruiser and Prado.

Slotted/grooved – these have slots or grooves radiating out from the rotor centre at a set angle, again to reduce heat and vent waste. They offer more bite with immediate stopping power (though they are considerably louder), making them ideal for track use in the Supra, GR Corolla and older or current 86 models.

Drilled and slotted – a performance option, often at a higher cost, melding the benefits of both slotted and drilled brake rotors.

Also, consider materials, specifically for overall performance, durability and cost. Cast-iron rotors are the most common, offering consistent braking in everyday driving, though are heavier and prone to rusting. The upside is that they are cheap to buy and maintain. Move up to carbon ceramic rotors for a lightweight yet high-performance option with superior heat resistance and unsurpassed durability.

If the cost of these is too high, consider rotors in bi-metallic composites (usually cast iron or steel and aluminium) with good heat resistance, acceptable weight for spirited driving, good durability and moderate pricing. Lastly, ensure wheel hub, brake pad and vehicle compatibility with rotors in the right diameter, thickness and bolt pattern.

Aftermarket exhausts are well worth the extra outlay, especially if you’re considering parts that also deliver on their promise of improved performance. Systems are often modular designs and usually pre-assembled as complete axle-back, cat-back or header-back units. If you’re mixing and matching factory and new exhaust components, for instance, changing mid-pipes or catalytic converters, with piping already on the car, then exhaust clamps help secure the new parts for a tighter fit. They also prevent gas leaks and ensure the whole system works as a single unit.

Exhaust Clamp Basics

source: yourmechanic.com

Essential to maintaining the integrity of exhaust systems, clamps ensure consistent airflow and engine performance. Their basic purpose is to connect different exhaust system parts, including header and mid-pipes, catalytic converters and muffler assemblies. Creating a tight seal prevents leaks, maintains proper emissions levels, and ensures parts are perfectly aligned. This reduces the risk of vibrations from separated parts, prevents power loss and eliminates irritating exhaust drone.

Made from durable, heat-treated metals (stainless steel, galvanised mild steel, aluminium alloys, brass, etc.), exhaust clamps are designed to withstand extreme temperatures typical of high-performance and modified stock engines. For applications with high-boost pressure (supercharged and turbocharged petrol and diesel engines), consider the durability and unmatched clamping force of reusable V band clamps.

Why V-band Exhaust Clamps for Your Car?

A V-band clamp provides a fast, lightweight and simple method of connecting exhaust piping. The clamps consist of two main parts – an inner V-shaped flanged sleeve and an outer circular band with a bolt-and-nut tightening mechanism. The sleeve slides over the parts that need to be joined. Tightening causes the band to compress the sleeve against the exhaust components, exerting equal force around the pipe circumference and removing stress from the bolting mechanism – the weak point in other clamp designs. The design also offers superior leak resistance (with 360-degree clamping) and secures parts even under high pressure.

Compared to other exhaust joints, V-bands offer numerous advantages:

360° clamping – create a uniform and tight seal across the whole circumference of the joined pipe sections without the need for gaskets.

Quick release – a single bolt or lever clamping mechanism allows for quick assembly and disassembly, ensuring easy access and maintenance.

Compact size and low weight – V-band exhaust clamps are smaller, lighter and sleeker than comparable bands with multiple bolt flanges.

High tensile strength and vibration resistance – durable metals and a broad contact area ensure high strength and pipe longevity in demanding driving. The tight seal also prevents vibrations.

High heat resistance – these exhaust joints can withstand temperatures up to 550°C, commonly sustained in high-boots applications.

Reusable – ball and socket, U-bolt and multiple bolt flange clamps; these can be used many times, offsetting the initial high cost.

So, how about the downsides? V-band types are generally pricier than other exhaust jointing hardware, but fall in line with other performance upgrades. Here, they show their racing origins. They also need to be torqued to the precise force to ensure a good seal. Other than that, they outclass all other exhaust clamps for sealing, durability, ease of use, and longevity.

Common Applications

The clamps find many uses outside racing applications. For cars used solely on the street, V-band clamps are used to secure downpipes and mid-section piping, bolt-on catalytic converters, and resonators. This allows more customisation with different parts without the need for welding. They also save a ton of time during installation. However, the parts truly shine in track and race cars, with continual tear-downs and inspections between practice runs and fast laps. Besides speed and convenience, these exhaust clamps ensure a tighter seal that remains unaffected by high temperatures and pressures of spent gases, meaning consistent performance and no costly repairs. Lastly, for turbocharged cars, the clamps secure downpipes, wastegate outlets and blow-off valves, replacing older 2-bolt clamp designs for a more secure seal able to handle the added boost pressure.

Buying Factors

source: turborebuild.co.uk

Size, materials, flange style, vehicle compatibility and the intended application are the main buying considerations when choosing the right V-band exhaust clamp.

Sizes

V bands are produced in many sizes to suit piping of different diameters. Sizes for automotive applications (the hardware is also used in the aerospace industry) range between 1 and 4 inches in inner diameter, with increments of 0.5 inches. Smaller clamps are used in boost pipes, mid-sized (1.5″ to 2.5″) types are seen in turbocharger and muffler connections, and 3″ and 4″ clamps are seen in wider diesel exhaust piping.

Materials

Stainless steel is the most common material used both in the inner flange sleeve and outer clamp, with good corrosion and heat resistance. Aluminium is a lower-cost option, while racing applications often deploy titanium and Inconel for even better performance and lasting durability.

Flange Styles

V-band flanges usually come in male/female styles for superior sealing without the need for gaskets.

Vehicle Compatibility and Application

Ensure the clamps are appropriate for your car, with parts varying in diameter. Moreover, when buying, balance price, materials and overall sizes for street or demanding track use. The clamps are sold separately or as complete kits with multiple clamps when installing full exhaust systems.

While performance car parts like exhausts and air intakes open a whole new world of improved acceleration and higher top speeds, it’s the basics that keep drivers, passengers and pedestrians safe. For all-round visibility to the side and rear of the vehicle, auto mirrors still remain the essential parts in increasing awareness in basic maneuvers like reversing or merging. Newer versions of reversing mirrors additionally work with other vehicle safety systems to alert drivers of blind spots, significantly reducing the risk of accidents in areas with limited visibility.

Role of Mirrors in Traffic

There’s more to car mirrors than meets the eye. Side and interior rearview mirrors are often the first parts drivers turn to before turning the steering wheel or applying the acceleration pedal. Both types have an active role in:

Increased visibility – rearview and side mirrors have the basic task of extending drivers’ field of vision to the rear and side of the car. They assist with merging and overtaking and provide a better view out when parking.

Safety – rearview mirrors raise awareness of approaching vehicles from behind, cars and vehicles that are dangerously close or are driving erratically, and uncovering blind spots, either with small convex mirrors built into the side mirrors, or with sophisticated safety tech like cameras and sensors. This help reduce instances of side impact and avoid pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Parking and basic maneuvers – standard car mirrors and those with a wider field of view allow drivers to better judge tight parking spots by enhancing rear and side visibility. This also helps limit scratches or dents in the paintwork when backing up.

Improved reaction times – regularly checking mirrors while driving provides drivers with vital information and time to make needed adjustments (such as changing direction or applying the brakes) to avoid imminent accidents.

New tech advancements such as auto-dimming rearview mirrors reduce instances of glare especially at night, while many new model vehicles have visual (and sometimes audible) alerts in the side mirrors, indicating approaching vehicles and traffic not visible due to blind spots.

When to Replace Your Car Mirror?

source: istockphoto.com

Damaged, cracked, scratched or broken mirrors aren’t of much use. They’ll obstruct your view to the side and rear and negatively impact safety. An easy solution are replacement auto mirrors, either as original equipment direct from the dealership, or as OE-replacements that are wholly compatible with your car. Both restore functionality. not only in terms of visibility. Many vehicles integrate the indicators into the side mirrors, as well as wiring for electric adjustment and heating/ demisting functionality. Timely replacements help reduce the risk of minor or major accidents, as well as getting fined or running up demerit points. Moreover, even minor accidents can void insurance claims. if your car has damaged mirrors and you’re involved in an accident, you risk invalidating insurance claims, or possibly incur injury or property damage liability if found at fault.

Features to Look for in Replacements

Depending on what you drive, mirrors can be as basic as they get, or come fully featured. When planning to buy car mirrors and working replacements, besides having your car VIN number ready to ensure model, made and trim compatibility, also consider restoring factory features, that the replacement is of the same design and size, and is made of quality outer housings (usually engineered plastics like ABS or polycarbonate) and matching, high quality glass. With that said, here are the main mirror features in today’s cars:

Manual or electric adjustment – levers or buttons allow adjusting the glass to your seating position and field of view. Power electric mirrors also provide the convenience of simultaneously adjusting the passenger side wing mirror. Most also have a memory function to accommodate several positions, for instance in fleet vehicles.

Heating – for cold Canadian climates, heating is one car mirror feature drivers can’t do without. Defrosting iced over mirrors is fast and simple, without damaging the glass or the housing.

Folding – a regular feature in newer models when locking the car, power folding is useable in tight spots and protecting the mirrors from tampering. Manual folding is also a feature in lower trims.

Integrated indicators – many vehicles, especially crossovers and SUVs, have the indicators built into the mirror housings. The higher location ensures better visibility for other traffic participants. This, along with the power function requires additional wiring.

Sensors – parking and temperature sensors in the wing mirrors are a common feature in newer cars and trucks. This enables easier parking, working alongside cameras and vehicle safety systems to limit blind spots, and warns drivers of low temperatures and condensation obstructing your view.

Lastly, when opting for a replacement, bear in mind the variety of glass. Choose flat glass mirrors for a more lifelike representation of what’s behind you, or go with convex glass for a wider field of vision, and increased safety, especially in blind spots.

The Holden Colorado was sold in Australia between 2008 and 2020. It has two available variants, several petrol and diesel engines, and single, space-cab and dual-cab designs. Second-gen RG cars were undeniably best-sellers, with reliable Duramax engines, decent safety tech in all trims and a capable ride on and off-road. Styling and options packages also threw in a ton of goodies at discount prices in cars meant for different uses.

If you’ve picked up a used Colorado and missed the factory extras, there’s still a ton of aftermarket gear to dress the car for any occasion. The ute has decent towing capacity to get trailers, caravans and boats where they’re needed, a standard-sized tub for hauling duties or additions like toolboxes or canopies, and solid mechanicals for off-roading. Most owners also opt for bespoke Holden Colorado bull bars in steel or aluminium to keep the paintwork and engine intact when driving in the bush, and as a foundation for off-roading necessities like winches and light bars.

Why Have a Bull Bar on Your Colorado?

source: ocamindustries.com.au

Bull bars replace the front stock bumper. Besides giving the Colorado a purposeful and aggressive look, this addition also plays a key role:

Front-end protection – Bull bars protect critical engine and vehicle parts (radiators, cooling fans, steering linkages, suspension components etc.) from direct animal strikes, thus the name. They’re useful in the bush, on unpaved roads and at the worksite. The parts also shield the lights, bonnet and windshield from road debris, spraying gravel, brush and other obstacles, ensuring you get to your destination unscathed.

Mounting point for accessories – Ensure any extras like CB antennas, LED driving lights, or light bars are secured to the vehicle, regardless of how or where you drive.

Winch accessibility – Winches are indispensable recovery gear when off the tarmac. While you don’t necessarily need a bull bar to install a winch, the protective parts make the process much easier. Look for winch-compatible bull bars with integrated winch cradles if you do regular rounds off-road.

Improved approach angles – With bumpers off, bull bars make technical terrain easier. They provide improved angles when negotiating uneven ground, and take the damage instead of the ute.

Increased resale values – Buyers are more keen on utes and Colorados, already decently kitted. Bull bars in good condition get you more cash towards your next purchase.

Common Bull Bar Designs

Aussies have preferred traditional triple hoops due to the increased protection, especially in kangaroo strikes. These designs shield a larger part of the Colorado’s front. Triple hoops generally sit wider and taller, and are particularly effective in strikes from the left or right sides. While offering the best protection and more space for additions, they’re the heaviest type and may require suspension tweaks to keep handling decent.

Single hoops consist of a single bar curving just in front of the radiator. They’re cheaper and lighter, but miss out on side protection. Newer hoopless bars are a hybrid design, similar in appearance to single hoops but with the level of protection and customisation offered by triple hoops.

Materials

How effective bull bars are in protecting your Colorado is largely down to the materials they’re made of. These also determine looks and longevity. Choose electropainted and powder-treated steel Holden Colorado bull bars for maximum strength, the best protection against last animals, and relatively low-maintenance needs.

Electroplating is necessary for increased corrosion protection, while coatings limit scratch marks and surface damage. However, a downside of steel bars, particularly triple hoops, is their high weight, sometimes requiring firming up the front with stiffer springs.

Aluminium bars are up to half the weight, don’t rust in any weather, and offer good strength. They’re harder to maintain, needing periodic polishing, and are usually more expensive than steel bars in the same size and design. Plastic bars are cheaper and more flexible options for lighter trail use, are exceptionally good against gravel and spraying debris, but won’t last or protect your Colorado in kangaroo strikes.

Buying Considerations

source: drivencarguide.co.nz

When shopping for Holden Colorado bull bars, consider a few key buying factors:

Compatibility – Both OE and aftermarket bull bars are vehicle-specific. This also means size and design differences between Colorado RC and RG models.

ADR compliance – Observe state and federal regulations on front-end additions, especially size and positioning.

Airbag, tech and safety compatibility – Bull bars must not impede airbag activation in the event of accidents and collisions, or the work of standard safety tech like cameras and radars.

Weight and materials – How does the added weight affect handling, and are modifications (and additional costs) necessary?

Matching Accessories

Bull bars can be sold on their own, but there’s more value when going with packaged deals. Winch-compatible bars aren’t that more expensive than regular types, but offer more versatility. Matching electric winches, usually with high-strength synthetic rope and pulling capacity twice that of a fully loaded Colorado are lifesavers in solo off-roading, and help get out mates’ utes stuck in ruts, brush, deeper mud and loose sand. For safer recoveries, also look for rated recovery bars that bolt onto the bull bars and act as an attachment point for hooks and rope.

For all-around protection, consider side brush bars that attach to hoops and protect the wheels, wheel flares and tires from side impact. And boost visibility on rural and unpaved roads with the right combination of driving lights and LED light bars in high brightness levels, and builds able to withstand typical bush conditions.

There’s a generally accepted rule among tuners and car rebuilders that performance upgrades start with bringing more air in for combustion. The more clean, oxygen-rich air mixed with just the right fuel ratio, the better. That’s assuming the engine block and internals can handle the extra heat.

Three simple upgrades set the scene for serious mods down the road. Tuners start with modified air intakes, pair these with performance exhausts, and add subtle but consistent improvements by throwing in a throttle controller. Combined, these additions will transform any car and help increase power and torque numbers. Tuners then turn to balancing all metrics with an ECU tune and extras like harmonic balancers, or upgrading the fuelling, ignition and cooling system for a rounded power upgrade.

Performance Exhaust System

It’s all in the name. A performance exhaust not only helps the engine with improved airflow and power gains, but is also better built, and will outlast any stock exhaust. The combo of wider and straighter tubing, improved materials, seamless joints and more attention to detail also brings in a host of other benefits:

Improved airflow – stock exhaust piping averages 2″ in most vehicles, regardless of displacement or power output. This snakes its way from the manifold and the undercarriage in multiple points, creating a restrictive path that slows spent gases on their way out. By going with wider diameters, and straighter layouts with few or no restrictions, a performance exhaust relieves the engine from built-up backpressure (spent gases lingering in the piping) and improves exhaust velocity. This increases engine efficiency with more frequent and cleaner combustion cycles.

Power and torque gains – faster gas removal means engines can take their next breath. Performance systems add anywhere between 5 to 10 percent more power and torque across a wider rev range. The vehicle not only feels livelier, with improved throttle response kicking in earlier, but can also help with higher redlines. A major contribution here are the revised header pipes designs for improved exhaust scavenging, or the vacuum and pulsating effect created in wider piping to push spent combustion gases out faster.

Better sound – stock systems are regulated by noise and emissions regulations. These are largely to blame for the non-existent or tamed sound coming out of the tips, even in cars carrying a “performance” label. Faster airflow and fewer restrictive parts like straight tubes or cat-deletes, and unique resonator and muffler pairings add more substance and volume, with a deeper, throatier exhaust note.

Better build for improved longevity – aftermarket exhausts swap the crush-bent mild steel for mandrel-formed stainless steel. This better handles higher temperatures and increased pressure, while also being more resistant to impact and rusting. There’s also a lower chance of deformities or ruptures, further improving airflow. A nice touch are the seamless welds, and eye-catching tips.

Modular designs and customisation options – car owners can change specific parts along the tubing, mix and match different parts, or go with pre-assembled “complete” systems with varied performance gains and prices. The modular, bolt-on designs also means quicker and easier installation.

Choose axle-back, cat-back or header/turbo completes, ensure engine and vehicle compatibility with the right diameters and inlet/outlet locations, and look for established manufacturers that also offer defined warranties and installation in the end price.

Air Intakes

source: dsportmag.com

This is the collection of piping and filters that deliver outside air into the engine. Stock intakes are where car makers have cut corners, with narrow-diameter (plastic) piping and low-quality paper filters. These don’t help air volumes or get rid of atmospheric pollutant like dirt or water the way aftermarket intakes do.

Choose between more complex and costlier cold air intakes, with piping pushed further out near the bumper or the hood vents and away from hot engine parts. Or short-ram systems that include straighter and wider intake pipes set closer to the throttle bodies or carbs. Both benefit from larger high-flow cone or dome cotton gauze filters that remove dirt, dust, moisture and debris. Compared to the stock intake, both aftermarket types push more air in for combustion for bigger bangs, and cold-air types also provide denser, oxygen-rich air for cleaner and more efficient burns.

Performance benefits are the snappier throttle response, improved engine efficiency with lower temperatures for the rated power output, improved airflow at defined volumes and angle for cleaner combustion and higher fuel efficiency. Like performance exhausts, the wider tubing and fewer restrictions boost engine sound, with more body and burble. The bespoke filters also remove more outside contaminants, reducing engine wear while also aiding airflow.

Throttle Controllers

This is the cheapest performance mod on the list. And the easiest to install. Throttle controllers are small electronic devices that manipulate the voltage sent from sensors lining the acceleration pedal and throttle body, essentially changing how the car reacts when you put the foot down. Stock vehicle electronics have an inbuilt delay in reaction times (measured in milliseconds) to prevent jolting. However, that disconnect can be frustrating with the pedal floored and nothing happening, especially when accelerating or overtaking.

Controllers can be set to different modes to get the most out of different driving conditions, with performance and off-roading settings that help get traction down, improve turbo spooling with less delay and bring a more enjoying ride. The choice to change settings in incremental steps also means more versatility across a range of different vehicles. Cars are faster to accelerate, use less fuel than usual doing so, and remove default throttle delay for instant engine response.

Summing Up

Aftermarket air intakes, a well-built performance exhaust system and a throttle controller are among the cheapest yet most effective performance modifications in any vehicle. Intakes and exhausts will need more work to get right, but deliver on every count. More air in and out of the engine and at faster speeds improves combustion efficiency, raises power numbers, reduces engine stress and belts out a deep sound for a more thrilling ride. Pair parts depending on your engine, budget and expectations and throw in a throttle controller for added kicks.

While owning a car was once considered a luxury, today it has become more common, but still, getting a dream car remains an aspiration that brings excitement and joy. If you enjoy driving, then you surely know that the car interior plays a crucial role in your overall experience. It can determine whether you’re comfortable or not, and if you’re one of the many who spend a decent amount of time in their cars, investing in the right accessories is a must for a ride that both you and your passengers will love.

Keeping things clean can help you preserve your vehicle’s value, longevity and appearance. But if you’re looking for an easy and effective way to boost the look and feel of your car interior, you can buy automotive seat covers. Even if your car’s factory seats are still holding up, as time goes by, they may experience wear and tear from dirt, spills, or sun damage, so it’s always a good idea to maximise their protection before it’s too late.

Tips on How to Choose Covers for Your Car Seats

source: autozone.com

Determine Your Budget

Set a budget and stick to it. Sometimes, investing a little bit more in quality can save you money in the long run, so keep that in mind before making a purchase.

Consider the Material

The material of the car seat covers plays a big role in their durability. Some of the most popular options out there are neoprene and leather. Neoprene covers are highly durable and water-resistant, making them ideal for those with active lifestyles, parents, and pet owners. They provide excellent protection against spills and stains while offering unmatched durability and comfort.

Leather covers, on the other hand, are renowned for their durability and sleek appearance. They are easy to clean and can easily add a touch of elegance to almost any car interior.

Durable seat covers will last you a long time. If you want to make sure you’re making the right decision, take a look at how they’re made and if the seams are well-stitched to ensure added comfort and durability.

Look for Protection Features and Air-Bag Compatibility

Whether you want to protect your car seats from scratches, stains and everyday wear and tear, or you want to protect your vehicle’s original upholstery and evade the costs of repairing or replacing it, look for features like water resistance, stain resistance and UV protection. Make sure the covers you choose are compatible with the pre-installed airbags. It’s a critical factor that should not be overlooked.

Choose the Perfect Fit

Universal Fit

Universal fit seat covers feature an adaptable, versatile design, which provides a flexible car seat protection solution. They’re an affordable option, but due to their adaptability, they may not provide a fit as tailored as other options and may appear loose or bulky on the seats. You can use them temporarily or occasionally, such as for rental cars or shared vehicles.

Semi-Universal Fit

Semi-universal covers are tailored to fit a specific subset of vehicle makes and models and offer a more refined appearance than universal options. They’re an affordable solution for creating a personalised look in your car interior.

Custom Fit

Custom covers are designed specifically for each car’s make and model, providing a snug fit that stays in place and offers reliable protection. They may cost a bit more upfront, but it’s worth, knowing that you can get the perfect fit for your vehicle’s seats, choose the colour you prefer, choose design and patterns and give a unique touch to your ride.

Check the dimensions of the seat covers carefully and make sure they’re designed to suit your car model. Finding the right fit is important for aesthetics and can have an impact on comfort, too.

Find a Reputable Supplier

Always buy from a trusted supplier. Do your own research; check their website to see what they offer, including prices, warranty, returns and refund policy, go through the photos and verified reviews.

Benefits of Installing Car Seat Covers

source: autozone.com

Comfort

High-quality covers can provide an extra layer of cushioning and support, enhancing the overall comfort of your car seats. This can improve your driving experience, especially when it comes to long travels or extended periods behind the wheel.

Ease of Cleaning

Seat covers these days are designed to be easy to clean and maintain, making it simple to keep your car interior in good shape for longer. This can be very helpful if you’re travelling with family and/or pets.

Aesthetics

Choosing carefully designed covers can instantly add a touch of sophistication to your ride, making it more stylish. Consider the existing colour scheme and design of your car interior and select colours and patterns that complement contrasting yet harmonious aesthetics.

Final Thoughts

Upgrading the looks of your wheels can be done in dozens of ways, but it’s grilles that are the easiest place to start. This is one of the defining features of any car and speaks volumes of brand identity. Car enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike can make out the BMW kidneys, from the vertical bars in any Jeep model, or the mesh designs in Ford trucks and high-end European luxury cars.

Grille Basics

source: tricktrucks.com

Aesthetics is a big part of vehicle grilles. The parts meld with other design elements, like the headlights and bumpers, to configure the vehicle’s front, essentially it’s “face”. But there’s more to grilles than appearance. Located above the bumpers, the protective car grille serves multiple tasks, from shielding radiators and engine parts from road debris, to directing cool air into the engine bay. Damaged or disfigured grilles not only put stain on the look of your car, but can cause major issues, from overheating to engine parts damaged from flying rocks, gravel and other road debris.

Functions of Auto Grilles

Protecting Vital Vehicle Parts

Well-built grilles play a key protective role. Reinforced plastics or metals do a great job in limiting damage from rocks, dirt and insects hitting engine parts at speed. Grilles are primarily designed to keep the radiators just behind them in top condition, but also components like hoses, fans, fluid tanks and other fragile parts located at the front of the engine.

Cooling and Airflow

Grilles double as air-intakes redirecting oncoming directly onto the radiator. This is one way to keep engines cool and maintain proper coolant temperatures. Different designs also direct swathes of cool air onto other parts that generate a lot of heat, particularly brake and suspension components. The parts also work with bumpers, splitters, scoops and bodywork elements to ensure safety, performance and vehicle longevity by regulating temperatures and airflow.

Aerodynamics

An often overlooked component in car grille design is how vehicles deal with drag created by incoming air. Grilles in performance cars tailor the amount of air they let in and where it’s directed depending on specifics like vehicle speed or temperatures. Newer cars have active grille designs that open or close to ensure proper cooling, or limit drag coefficients as speeds rise.

Appearance

These are parts most recognizable in brand identity. Grilles not only have specific designs, shapes or sizing, but also speak about model and make history. Subtle changes throughout the years are evidence of where car brands are going in shaping brand identity and the direction their products are taking. A fine example are the oversized kidney grilles in current BMW cars, marking a shift from conservative performance and luxury design language to more aggressive and boxy body shapes.

Why Change the Grille on Your Car?

There are more than a few reasons to change your vehicle grille:

Cracks and damage – cracked, fading or chipped plastics or dented metals can be from collisions or larger objects hitting the grille. This compromises the main purpose of the part in protecting your car from flying debris.

Rust – longer exposure to salt spray, mud and rain can lead to rust buildup in subpar metals, spoiling the overall look and becoming a potential safety trap.

Limited airflow – tuners change grilles to increase airflow into the engine. This balances the higher temperatures that come with engines that produce more power.

Looseness and misalignment – replace grilles that have damaged or loosened hardware causing alignment issues. The parts should sit straight with the rest of the car to direct air as needed.

Aesthetics – changing to different designs, finishes or colours is testament to personal identity and what you want in a car. Custom grilles are an easy way to stand out.

Common Designs and Styles

source: tricktrucks.com

Mesh and billet grilles are the two commons types seen across multiple car brands. The fine, woven design in mesh grilles blends well with luxury and performance car makes like Bentley, Audi and Lexus, emphasizing speed, style and meticulous engineering. Most are made of coated stainless steel or chromed aluminum. Billet designs were made famous by Rolls Royce.

These are arranged vertically, often in the thicker billet bars, or in thinner, and more subtle horizontal bars seen in a range of SUVs where they showcase robustness and durability. Car owners can also have custom-designed parts, produced with advanced techniques like CNC machining and laser cutting. Names, logos and graphics can all be etched in or added to the materials to suit personal tastes.

Buying Replacement Grilles

To get a grille compatible with your car, consider materials, sizes, easy fit and pricing. There’s a wider selection of quality materials in direct replacement or aftermarket grilles, with an emphasis on build, durability and style. Opt for metals where possible, or if you’re reworking the bodywork, matching carbon fibre or reinforced plastics for lower weight and higher strength.

Correct sizing ensures a clean fit and shorter installation times. Also look for matching hardware, such as moulding and fasteners. Lastly, consider getting an OE grille to restore the factory looks, or go aftermarket for different design cues and personalized grilles at lower prices.

How many times have you told yourself that you’d like to swap your car’s factory exhaust system for something sportier? There’s just one problem with replacing your OE exhaust with an aftermarket exhausts system, though: how to be sure the replacement will actually perform better than your factory one. A lot of aftermarket exhaust manufacturers promise a world of performance – and most fall painfully short of expectations.

A premium quality exhaust system is more than just differing lengths of big pipes. It takes vehicle- and engine-specific engineering, craftsmanship, and the right choice of materials to bring the entire package together. That’s why if you’re unsure about whether the aftermarket system you’ve been dreaming about is really up to delivering what it promises, there are a few simple ways to verify its performance potential before you commit to buying.

Superior Balance is the Key to Premium Performance Exhausts

Source: facebook.com/XForceExhaustAU

Let’s be honest: with so many aftermarket exhaust manufacturers on the market, it’s hard to know which ones are actually capable of performing as advertised. Fortunately, premium quality high performance exhaust systems are easy to identify if you know what you’re looking for.

Not surprisingly, the search for performance begins with brands whose engineering expertise you know and trust. Premier high performance exhaust manufacturers and their engineers understand that in order for an exhaust system to produce results, it has to verifiably satisfy the basics of high output exhaust design, which include:

Ensuring the system’s scavenging is achieving its best possible exhaust gas velocity;

Ensuring that excess exhaust gas heat remains locked in the system to help aid in scavenging; and,

Ensuring that the detrimental effects of heat cycling are reduced as much as possible.

Top tier exhaust system suppliers know that the key to performance is superior balance that can be pointed to. And when it comes to high performance exhaust systems, they aren’t afraid to present buyers with the results of dyno tests as irrefutable proof that their systems perform.

Visual Inspection Lets You See the Manufacturer Quality

Whether it’s in the precision radiusing of mandrel bent curves, or the use of TIG-welded flanges for maximum vibration resistance, craftsmanship means everything. And make no mistake: when you’re looking at a custom-built performance exhaust system constructed from components differing in lengths and diameters, the quality of the workmanship is an excellent indicator of what you can expect with regard to performance and reliability.

From header to tailpipe, visual inspections are an instant way to evaluate the level of craftsmanship that a manufacturer is putting into their exhaust systems. And as a prospective buy, you want to carefully examine a system before investing in one, especially when it comes to:

The condition and consistency of the weld seams, fittings, and bends;

How easily and solidly the system slips together when dry fitted; and,

How well the system fits under your car, with or without the need for any major modifications.

And because high performance exhausts are characterised by larger pipes, now is the time to confirm that your pipe diameters are appropriately sized for your engine’s output. An aftermarket exhaust system with pipes that are too large can leave an engine drowning in its own gases, so you want to confirm with the manufacturer that your pipe diameters are optimised, and if applicable, Australian Design (ADR) compliant.

Get the Specs on Your Cat and Mufflers Up Front

Source: facebook.com/XForceExhaustAU

With the exception of some competition and road racing exhaust setups, high flow cats, as well as low restriction mufflers and resonators are likely to be a part of your exhaust package. Both play a crucial role in how well your engine breathes. Premium performance exhaust manufacturers like xForce Exhaust Australia specialise in bespoke cat and muffler combinations ranging from 2.0“ – 4.0“.

Not surprisingly though, cats and mufflers are also subject to various degrees of regulation. That’s why in addition to dyno test results and proof of ADR compliance, your performance exhaust supplier should be able to give you the assurance that your cats are emission compliant, and mufflers are within the country’s 96db limit. As a minimum though, there are a few attributes that you’ll want to confirm about these components before purchasing them, especially if you’re looking at performance exhaust online, and they include:

Whether your cat has a 100 or 200 cell count, both of which are conducive to higher flow;

The type of substrate used in the cat, including the type of metal loading it has;

The internal design and volume of the mufflers;

The number of internal baffles the muffler has; and,

The muffler’s inlet and outlet pipe diameters.

Ideally, if you’ve ordered a bespoke system from a high performance exhaust shop and your car is equipped with a cat and mufflers, you want to know more about it than just its advertised performance. You want to know what makes that performance possible; and across the board, this is the best way to discover what’s going to give your prime components an advantage over everyone else’s.

Materials Make the Difference in Exhaust Durability

Once you’ve addressed craftsmanship and components, you need to consider the materials used in your exhaust system. From the ultra lightweight transition metals used in top end race exhaust systems, to the austenitic alloys found in mild custom and off-road systems, an exhaust system’s design is ultimately determined by the materials it’s crafted from.

Everything, from cost to corrosion resistance, is a factor of material selection, which is why you want to know which metals your system is made from. Premium aftermarket exhausts make the best use of a balance of materials, the majority of which are:

304 grade stainless. Chromium-rich 304 stainless is one of the most frequently used alloys in performance exhaust systems for cars, favoured for its durability, versatility, and superbly polished finish.

409 grade stainless. 409 stainless is an affordable alternative to 304 stainless which, while slightly less aesthetically pleasing, possesses comparable corrosion resistance and workability.

High strength titanium. With a price tag of up to five times more than 304 stainless, titanium is close to the pinnacle of lightweight upgrade exhaust tubing, and offers incomparable corrosion, and heat resistance.

Knowing the type of metal your exhaust system is crafted from gives you the advantage when it comes to accurately assessing a manufacturer’s claims about durability and longevity. It’s also the way to benchmark the kinds of on- and off-road conditions you’re going to want to expose your system to.

The Final Word

At the end of the day, whether it’s for the added RPMs on the top end, or for the throatier growl on the bottom, an aftermarket exhaust system can give you a new outlook on your car’s performance. When you’re choosing a system though, you want to be sure that the manufacturer’s performance is genuinely in line with what they’re promising.

That’s why when it comes to premium quality exhaust systems, you only want to buy from a manufacturer with solid performance reputation, and one who can prove their claims. It’s the best way to verify your performance potential, while protecting yourself from over-zealous performance claims.

With a production history spanning more than 50 years, Toyota’s unbreakable Hilux is the standard that all other 4x4s are measured by. No other commercially available truck enjoys the Hilux’s reverence or distinction when it comes to unassailable ruggedness; and in a country like Australia, it’s a trait that’s worth its weight in gold.

That’s also why it’s no surprise that some of the toughest, and most performance-oriented aftermarket exhaust systems for the Hilux are manufactured in Australia. Aussie engineers are under no illusions about how to draw out the best qualities from an exhaust system. They know it takes more than just shiny pipes to withstand Australia’s extreme climate, and what they’ve come up with for the Hilux are a series of exhaust solutions that convincingly live up to the Hilux’s unbreakable reputation.

Trust Aftermarket Hilux Exhaust Systems for Undisputed Reliability

Source: youtube.com

Let’s be honest: while it’s tempting to think of aftermarket exhaust systems strictly in terms of output when you’re talking about an upgrade for the world’s toughest 4WD, you also have every reason to expect it to be the hardest-wearing system in the world. This is where premium aftermarket Toyota Hilux exhaust systems distinguish themselves from all others.

High-quality, Australian-made systems don’t just flow better: they do it with the hardened reliability that Hilux owners demand from their vehicles. You only have to look at the range of Hilux models that exhaust systems are available for to understand just how committed the Aussie aftermarket is to live up to these heavy-duty Toyotas’ standard for durability.

You can buy durable aluminised, or stainless steel Hilux exhaust systems for each of the following models:

1997 – 2005 LN147, LN167, and LN179 3.0L diesels;

1999 – 2005 KZN165 / 1KZ-TE 3.0L turbo diesels;

2005 – 2015 KUN26R and KUN16R 3.0L turbo-diesels;

2005 – 2017 GGN150 V6 4.0L petrols; and,

2015 – present GUN126R N80 2.8L turbo diesels.

Top quality, ADR (Australian Design Rule) compliant Hilux performance exhaust systems are manufactured in 2.5“ and 3.0“ diameters, and are available in both full, and cat-back configurations. And while the best of these aftermarket Hilux exhaust system upgrades can increase your engine’s output by as much as 10%, it’s their ability to withstand Oz’s environmental extremes that makes them the perfect complement to the Hilux’s undisputed stellar reputation for reliability.

Superior Exhaust Engineering For Hilux Performance and Reliability

In spite of their straightforward construction, exhaust system designers are all too aware that in order to maximize an engine’s output, it also has to be more effective at expelling spent gases. It’s a process that’s quickly complicated, however, by awkward exhaust tube radiuses, turbulence inside the tubes, and even the tendency for hot, less dense air to want to linger inside the system. And it’s no coincidence that these complications will weigh just as heavily on the system’s reliability as they do on engine performance.

Performance, reliability, and durability all come down to how efficiently a system is able to remove spent exhaust gases. That’s why Aussie-engineered Toyota Hilux exhaust systems naturally eclipse the performance of less capable aftermarket systems when it comes to:

Scavenging as much hot spent exhaust gas away from the engine and through the system as possible;

Creating as much flow velocity to evacuate spent gases through the system as quickly as possible; and,

Eliminating the root causes of backpressure that restrict exhaust gas movement.

Make no mistake: when it comes to tubing configurations that are designed for the lowest possible restrictions under the harshest possible conditions, Australian-made, fully mandrel bent, and TIG-welded Hilux exhausts are as unbeatable as the rest of your vehicle is unbreakable. And with their optimized flow characteristics, including high-flow mufflers, these Toyota Hilux exhausts deliver an array of benefits that are perfectly aligned with the Hilux’s rock-solid repertoire of performance when it comes to:

Snappier throttle response and acceleration;

An increase in high RPM horsepower; and,

A reduction in fuel consumption due to less back pressure.

Although some commercially available aftermarket Hilux exhaust setups are intended strictly for off-road use, they’re all crafted with materials and coatings that are designed to take on the roughest environmental conditions that Australia has to offer.

Materials That Are Consistent

Source: lovinglocal.com.au

No matter where you look on a Hilux, it’s obvious that materials deserve a lot of credit for their resilience. With its near bullet-proof powertrain, and a steel chassis that’s constructed to endure the most crushing impacts, there’s little question about the Hilux’s unyielding durability. It’s also the same rugged reliability that aftermarket exhaust manufacturers in Australia build into their Toyota Hilux exhaust upgrade packages.

Heavy-duty aluminised and stainless steel stock are the hands-down preference for sturdy, affordable Hilux tubing; and together with their thermal coatings and excellent heat transfer properties, both metals also offer a core of critically rugged benefits that include:

Low weight and superior tensile strength;

High resistance to heat cycling and excessive vibration; and,

Exceptional resistance to rust and caustic exhaust gas corrosion.

And if you do damage an aluminised or stainless steel exhaust, they’re easily repaired with simple welding. It’s a reminder that no matter what your vehicle is subjected to, you can be confident that your aftermarket Hilux exhaust upgrade is just as unbreakable as the rest of it.

The Final Word

At the end of the day, when it’s time to upgrade your Hilux’s exhaust, a standard aftermarket system just won’t do. You want a system that’s as rugged as your vehicle, and that’s precisely what you get with a genuine Aussie-engineered solution.

You can trust a premium, Australian-made Toyota Hilux exhaust system to give you the performance you want with the durability you expect. They’re the systems you can trust to uphold your Hilux’s unbreakable legacy.
